006: evidence part 1
6 april 2026
evidence of what. idk exactly how i wish to put the macro image into words, but the evidence in this post is: proof of when she did her best to kill me
while chilling in the hospital (surprisingly not much waiting given how late she actually got started) we made a big list that started kind of orderly but soon spiralled out of control, and the list was titled 'what music were we listening to and when'
it would be insane to reproduce the whole thing here. is she insane enough to do it, though?
-
'91-'92: the radio
EMF, wilson phillips, michael jackson, genesis -
'93: grunge!
someone gives us AIC 'dirt' for our birthday, life changing. also: nirvana (haha, nirvana is an 'also' for me), pearl jam, guns n roses -
'93-'94: brief hippie phase
(why? how? did all 90s kids wish they had lived in the 60s?) grateful dead, led zep, jefferson airplane.
also: cypress hill (met a cool quebecoise girl), ace of base, roxanne (interesting)strong strong memory: many hours spent playing ffII while stairway plays on repeat. specifically in the dwarf world & the sylph cave. (rydia - another important animated signpost to another life)
-
'94: hiphop
met a skate kid from la: nas, wu-tang, brand nubian, black moon, mc eiht, dre, snoop, too $hort, heiro
and now it's like "this is all of high school, not really in order"
- more grunge!
superunknown, siamese dream, STPs first couple albums, more AIC - silly:
phish (haha, a burnout kid from CO gave us acid and also introduced us to phish, obv) - the librarian's mixtapes:
prodigy, moby, chemical brothers, photek, omni trio, gusgus, fatboy slim, crystal method, moloko - that girl:
tricky, portishead, sneakerpimps - that boy's older brother:
pavement, spinanes, yo la, versus (his big bro was a college radio disk jockey ooooooo) - my roommate:
biggie, pac, bone thugz, gravediggaz - the theater kids:
nine inch nails - kind of found this myself:
pi soundtrack: roni size, ed/op, bamnco de gaia, aphex twin, autechre, massive attack
and now it's college
- goth club stuff
delerium and other loeb projects (not cool enough to really like FLA but i tried), sisters of mercy, rob zombie dragula remix, blade soundtrack, kmfdm (radio station had a copy of liebeslied with the carmina burana sample), more nin, pigface - chill electronic
morning after mix cd, orb, orbital, more aphex twin (alberto balsam!!! flim!), warp records stuff, squarepusher "idm", mille plateaux, akufen - tool?
hahaha ofc tool, all by themselves (skinny puppy remix of stinkfist, wait, is that on slsk? gotta check) (ofc it is, holy fucking shit, this is still so sick) - hiphop mixtapes from bro
primo showcase, biggie, qb stuff, southern stuff, SCREW
and then around 1999-2000 we discover our great passion: drum n bass. and then it's all drum n bass all the time for the next 5 or 6 years. learning to mix, spending all that work-study $ on mail order records, we bought our first record before we even had tables, it was makai "beneath the mask", WE STILL HAVE IT, almost the last of the true (as the judge might say), making tapes, dl'ing mixes, bbs forums, platinum, playing the track ID game, white labels, nervously talking to other people who shared the love ... this music was everything, it was all i thought about
2005: it all just stops. move back to nyc from boston, live with girlfriend, adopt cat, stop playing records. just all at once. they gathered just for the next 6 years before i got rid of them at housing works, posted on the bbs forums, someone must have just about fallen over when they found my stash.
but anyway. stopped playing records entirely. certainly didn't go see bands or go dancing. what did i listen to? nothing? i remember the girl got me an ipod for xmas but i broke it with 48v accidentally and never replaced it, so i must not have missed it very much. what were my friends listening to? i wasn't making friends. although i did meet special agent utah, that was pretty funny.
